‘The Post’ delivers but doesn’t crack this list of the Top 5 journalism movies

A strong opening weekend, glowing reviews and likely Oscar nominations bode well for “The Post” reaching a large audience as it argues the case for press freedom.

But journalists will judge the Meryl Streep-Tom Hanks-Steven Spielberg movie against the best journalism films ever made, and that bar is extraordinarily high. It would be tough even to anoint it the top offering of the decade since “Spotlight” won the Academy Award for best picture of 2015.

From the perspective of an editor, former reporter and lover of journalism movies, “The Post” was excellent and a timely reminder

Facebook is changing its News Feed. Here’s how to make sure you still see important, local stories

Well, it has happened again.

Facebook, the social media giant where 67 percent of Americans get their news , has updated its algorithm.

The change, announced Thursday afternoon via press release and CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s personal Facebook page , will prioritize content that your friends engage with and show you less content from brands and publishers.

Simply put: Your Facebook News Feed will soon be full of the posts that your friends comment on and like the most and will show less of the videos and click-bait-y articles that you see from online media outlets.

We at the Southern California News Group

Air + Style lands Phoenix, Zedd and Gucci Mane but ditches its big ramp

The Air + Style festival is climbing higher with its music this year — the event has booked headliners Phoenix, Zedd and Gucci Mane — but its sports action will be closer to the ground without the massive big air ramp.

The festival, now in its fourth year, returns to Exposition Park in Los Angeles March 3 and 4 and while the big ramp won’t be the concert and snowboard competition organized by two-time Olympic gold medalist Shaun White , it will include a skateboarding competition for the first time.

“I can’t wait to come home from the energy of the

Do fast-food price wars suggest recession ahead?

I’ve long been a “discountologist” specializing in “couponology.”

This is the art of tracking merchants who are significantly slashing prices and which ones are simply “marketing” with fairly ordinary deals.

This analysis of bargains comes in handy when managing household finances. But I also use it as a reliable economic indicator.

It’s an odd practice requiring some backward logic. A flood of discounts may be good for your finances but it might also signal bosses are getting desperate — and your job security could be at risk.

Remember all those great deals you could get … during the Great Recession?

Welcome to 2018 and

Who needs experts? Use this do-it-yourself local housing forecaster!

How do I think the local housing market will do in 2018?

Let me be lazy and dodge an attempt at prognostication by offering up a challenge: a Southern California do-it-yourself home-price outlook!

This column will walk you through what I think are 11 key local variables that could impact the two bottom-line factors to any market’s health: a house hunter’s psyche vs. an owner’s willingness to sell.

Remember, no two markets are alike, so your local-local focus may very well result in a different score than others. And that’s why real estate benchmarks, like pricing, move in different waves even in

32 missing, oil spills out after tanker collision off China

By GERRY SHIH

BEIJING — An Iranian oil tanker collided with a bulk freighter and caught fire off China’s east coast, leaving the tanker’s entire crew of 32 missing and causing it to spill oil into the sea, authorities said Sunday.

Chinese authorities dispatched police vessels and three cleaning ships to the scene after the collision, which happened late Saturday. The South Korean coast guard also sent a ship and a plane to help search for the missing crew members — 30 Iranians and two Bangladeshis.

The Panama-registered tanker Sanchi was sailing from Iran to South Korea when it collided with the
