ORANGE Orange’s football program recruited Nick Guzman from soccer to kick field goals and extra points last season. The arrangement worked pretty well for the Panthers until Friday night.
That’s when it became legendary.
The junior booted an 18-yard field goal for the only score of overtime to lift upstart Orange past previously undefeated Caruthers of Fresno County, 46-43, in a thrilling CIF Southern California Division 6-AA regional at El Modena High.

We have photos from all four games for the county teams: Division 1 (Mater Dei vs. St. John Bosco), Division 7 (El Modena vs. Don Lugo), Division 11 (Katella vs. Covina) and Division 13 (Orange vs. Silver Valley).
LA CANADA — After a 53-year hiatus, the St. Francis football team is back in a CIF Southern Section final.
And they can thank junior quarterback Darius Perrantes. The transfer from Crespi High was 21 of 25 for 273 yards and four touchdowns as the Golden Knights (12-1) defeated El Toro 52-17 in a CIF-SS Division 3 semifinal.
The Golden Knights will play Rancho Verde in the championship game next week.
