HUNTINGTON BEACH – Huntington Beach High junior linebacker John Gosney said he relied on “heart” to end Marina’s threat late in the fourth quarter on Friday night at Sheue Field.
The Vikings were 27 yards from trying to tie the score with 19 seconds left when Gosney tripped up quarterback Ian Green to preserve a 28-20 Sunset League victory on the Oilers’ homecoming night.
Green rolled toward the Vikings’ sideline about to launch a pass toward the end zone when Gosney grabbed at his feet for a game-saving sack.

ORANGE – El Modena scored on its first three drives and shut out Brea Olinda into the fourth quarter for a 31-14 win in both teams’ North Hills League opener Thursday at El Modena High.
“This week was just more importantly getting off to a good start with league,” El Modena coach Matt Mitchell said. “Kind of building off last week of getting ourselves better and worrying about things we can control.”
No. 18 El Modena (6-2, 1-0) moves on to play Esperanza at home Thursday, Oct. 26. The Vanguards are ranked third in CIF-SS Division 7.
Brea Olinda (2-6, 0-1) plays
COSTA MESA – Patrick McMorris carried 17 times for 137 yards and four touchdowns to lead Godinez to a 42-14 victory over Calvary Chapel in a key Orange Coast League game Thursday at Orange Coast College.
Godinez (5-3, 3-0) is two victories away from going undefeated in league for the second year in a row.
The Grizzlies play Costa Mesa and then Estancia, which were both defeated by the Eagles (2-6, 2-1) this season.
McMorris was also a playmaker on defense.
