Box office: ‘It’ floats away with record-breaking $117.2 million weekend

‘It’ is a hit.

The Stephen King adaptation from New Line and Warner Bros. shattered records over the weekend earning $117.2 million from 4,103 locations according to studio estimates on Sunday.

Not only is “It” now the largest ever opening for a horror movie and the largest September opening of all time, the film more than doubled the earnings of the previous record holders. Before this weekend “Paranormal Activity 3” had the biggest horror opening with $52.6 million from 2011, and the highest September debut was “Hotel Transylvania 2’s” $48.5 million in 2015.

Box office: ‘Hitman’s Bodyguard’ outdoes ‘Logan Lucky’ with $21.6 million take

Critics loved “Logan Lucky” and gave a big collective shrug to “The Hitman’s Bodyguard,” but when it came to the test of the marketplace, audiences went their own way.

The two action flicks faced off this weekend, and “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” emerged the victor with a chart-topping $21.6 million, according to studio estimates Sunday, while “Logan Lucky” sputtered on arrival with $8.1 million.

Both had notable stars, “Logan Lucky” has Channing Tatum and Daniel Craig, while “The Hitman’s Bodyguard” boasts Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson, both were opening in over 3,000 theaters and both cost around $30 million to produce.

John Heard, best known as dad in ‘Home Alone,’ dies

John Heard, best known as the father in “Home Alone” and “Home Alone 2,” has died at 72.

TMZ was the first to report the news Saturday morning, with entertainment publication Variety confirming it .

In addition to the “Home Alone” films, Heard appeared in films such as “Awakenings,” “Big,” “Beaches,” “Gladiator” and “Sharknado.” He also appeared on the television shows “Elementary,” “Entourage” and “The Sopranos,” for which he earned an Emmy award nomination.

Variety reports the actor was found dead in a hotel room in Palo Alto where he was recovering from back surgery.
