El Modena tripped up by too many near-misses, falls in CIF State regional final

Kicker recruited from soccer extends Orange’s special football season (video)

ORANGE Orange’s football program recruited Nick Guzman from soccer to kick field goals and extra points last season. The arrangement worked pretty well for the Panthers until Friday night.

The junior booted an 18-yard field goal for the only score of overtime to lift upstart Orange past previously undefeated Caruthers of Fresno County, 46-43, in a thrilling CIF Southern California Division 6-AA regional at El Modena High.

El Dorado’s Kenedy Lilly stays hot, scores 41 points two days after school record

No basketball player in Orange County is hotter than El Dorado’s Kenedy Lilly.

The 6-foot-5, uncommitted junior scored 40 points Wednesday in a 67-55 victory against previously undefeated El Rancho at the Covina Classic.

On Monday, Lilly scored a school-record 50 points in a 65-23 victory against El Monte, shattering the school record by 12 points.

“She has not only been scoring but playing awesome defense,” El Dorado coach Sarita Stamps said Wednesday night. “She is not a one-sided player. She does a great job of passing as well.”

Northwood girls tennis flexes muscle, dispatches Sunset League champion Newport Harbor

NEWPORT BEACH The Pacific Coast League has been called the Southeastern Conference of high school girls tennis.

In the first round of the CIF-SS Division 1 playoffs, the group backed up that claim Wednesday.

Northwood, an at-large team from the PCL, defeated Sunset League champion and host Newport Harbor, 11-7, to reach Friday’s second round against undefeated and fourth-seeded Arcadia.

The Timberwolves, who tied for third in league with Beckman, won six of nine matches in singles and five of nine in doubles. They were also able to play 15 players, courtesy of substitutions in the final round.
