Long Beach State pulls away to beat Pepperdine

MALIBU — Bryan Alberts hit a career-high six 3-pointers on the way to a 20-point night, as Long Beach State’s pace was a key in a 78-71 nonconference victory over Pepperdine at Firestone Fieldhouse.

Long Beach scored 16 points on the fast break and forced Pepperdine into 16 turnovers. The 49ers also did an excellent job sharing the ball, making 21 assists with just 12 turnovers.

A 10-3 run gave Long Beach a 35-26 lead with 2:41 left in the half, but Pepperdine (3-7) took advantage of a series of LBSU turnovers to pull even at 35-35 by halftime.

Ahmad, Allman lead Cal State Fullerton past Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. — Khalil Ahmad scored 24 points with four 3-pointers, Kyle Allman added 21 points and Cal State Fullerton defeated Portland 76-66 on Wednesday night to win its fourth straight.

Dominik Heinzl had 10 points and four rebounds and Jackson Rowe added eight boards for the Titans (5-3), who scored 14 second-chance points off of eight offensive rebounds.

Franklin Porter’s 3-pointer and jumper capped Portland’s opening 13-0 run, but the Titans rallied and Allman scored six straight points to cut the Pilots’ lead to 33-32 by halftime.

UC Irvine overwhelms Whittier in tuneup for Nevada

IRVINE — Evan Leonard and Tommy Rutherford scored 16 points apiece to lead six UC Irvine players in double figures as the Anteaters crushed NCAA Division III Whittier 112-65 on Wednesday night at the Bren Center.

Eyassu Worku had a season-high 14 points and a career-high seven assists, John Edgar Jr. scored 12 points and Justin Wertner and Darrian Traylor added 11 apiece for UCI (4-5). The Anteaters, who came in averaging 72.1 points per game with a previous season high of 91, shot 62 percent (41 for 66) from the field.

Georgia rallies to beat Cal State Fullerton in Wooden Legacy opener

FULLERTON  — Cal State Fullerton’s Kyle Allman, Jr. led all scorers with a career-high 34 points, but Georgia outlasted the host Titans 64-57 on Thursday night in a hard-fought defensive battle at the Wooden Legacy.

Georgia’s Turtle Jackson scored 14 of his career-high 16 points in the second half, and Yante Maten had 13 of his 15 after the intermission as well to lead the Bulldogs’ comeback victory.
